The African Institute for Multidisciplinary Studies (AIMS) was established in 2018 as a research and career development institute. It originated from the Somali Social Development Association (SOSDA), a community development organization founded in 2012.
SOSDA aimed to empower the community by focusing on the Millennium Development Goals, which later became the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In June 2017, the association's department of community engagement and development organized a conference to emphasize the significance of promoting a research-driven institute that also provides career-focused higher educationift enabled AIMS to expand its educational programs across the country and . As a result, AIMS was established on September 10, 2018, in Mogadishu.
